Plitvice Lakes

The Plitivice Lakes National Park is a particular geological and hydrogeological karst phenomena. The Plitvice Lakes complex was proclaimed a National Park on april 8, 1949. This is the largest, oldest and most visited Croatian National Park. It represent a wooded mountainous area with 16 lakes of different sizes filled with crystal blue water. Lakes gets water from numerous streams and they interconnected by cascades and waterfalls. Stone barriers are created in period before ten thousand years which are one of the fundamental peculiarities of the Park. Special geographic position and specific climate features are contribute to the emergence of many natural phenomena and rich biodiversity. Stone sediments have been shaped Pleistocene till today in the cramps and depressions between the surrounding mountains. The upper Lakes in the south are predominantly made up of dolomite and the lower Lakes in the north by limestone stones. There are spacious forest complex, exceptional natural beauty of lakes and waterfalls, rich flora and fauna, mountain air, contrasts of autumn colors, forest paths and wooden bridges and much more are the part of the unrepeatable entities that UNESCO declared as a world heritage in 1979 among the first in the world. The Park is divided into the narrow and wide area according to the degree of protection. It is located in the area of two counties, 91% of the park is in Lika-Senj county and 9% in Karlovac county. In the Plitvice Lakes there is also the source of the river Korana which is fed with water from the lake. The clime in National Park is moderately mountainous.
